Starting Up: Lakes Legal Limited

I started my own business based on my ambition to provide a basic legal service at an affordable price to those who could not afford the hourly rate charged by my solicitor colleagues.

I started by looking at my competition and analysing what they were doing wrong. During my research, I identified that the majority of my competition had dabbled in the world of internet marketing but that none of them had really ‘got it’- here was my chance. I knew I wanted my business to grow slowly, organically, if you like, and so starting out online provided the perfect platform. It also gave me the perfect testing ground to see if my idea would work.

Internet marketing enabled me to build my brand and identify clearly what my business was all about, both in my own mind and in that of my customer. I used a number of different platforms to promote my business and I encouraged my clients to do the same.

When I finally did launch my business locally I found that my community already knew about me and my work. I attended local networking events and other business owners recognised my company logo.

From there, establishing myself as a local expert with a good client manner naturally followed, and my business continues to grow on a monthly basis.

Will your death kill your business?

Running your own business is immensely satisfying and hopefully a financially rewarding process. A living legacy of your life and work for generations to come. For this to happen, like all business ventures, you will need to plan ahead. Much like you would plan for your family’s future following your death you need to plan your business’ continuation strategy. (more…)
